Athletics pitcher Joey Devine underwent season-ending surgery this week.
A story on MLB.com says: “Devine, 25, posted a 0.59 ERA in 42 appearances last season and was expected to share the closer role with fellow righty Brad Ziegler, but he was sidelined for most of Spring Training with elbow pain.”
“A’s manager Bob Geren said the surgery was performed in Birmingham, Ala., by Dr. James Andrews. The procedure focused on Devine’s ulnar collateral ligament, and as of late Tuesday afternoon the A’s did not know if the ligament was repaired or replaced.”
Joey was one of the best young pitchers I photographed in recent years. It seems every time I photographed him, it was lights out for the batters. Judging by his 2008 stats, it appears he carried that skill over into the majors after Atlanta traded him away.

All the best to Joey for a complete recovery.
