Matt Moore, a 22-year-old lefty who hasn’t even been in the majors for a month, is the first winner in the 2011 playoffs.

Moore led the Tampa Bay Rays to a 9-0 win in the first game of their American League Division Series with the Rangers on Friday.

“Three weeks ago, I was in the Minor Leagues, and to be a part of this now in this postseason push is something I never dreamed was going to happen this year,” Moore told Bill Chastain of MLB.com.

I photographed Moore when he pitched at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C., two years ago when he was playing for the Rays’ Single A club. Donruss turned one of those photos into a card.

I can’t believe I didn’t post a photo of 2008 top draft pick Tim Beckham when he was in Greenville this summer.
Well, better late than never.

Tampa Bay outfield prospect Kyeong Kang has been named to the World Team for the  2009 XM All-Star Futures Game to be held at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on All-Star Sunday, July 12.
Kang is one of a handful of Futures Game stars to play recently at Greenville’s Fluor Field. I took this photo of him just a couple of weeks ago as he played for the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

I’m prepared to take any old lucky break

Much as I’d like to, I can’t really take much credit for this photo. It just fell into my lap sort of by accident.
Oh, sure, I was concentrating on the outfield activity, and sure, I was trying for a good-catch photo. But the whole idea of the action replicating the billboard was just good luck.
Of course, when I saw it in the computer I quickly pulled it out of the batch and posted it to MinorLeagueBaseball.com, where it became one of the latest Photos of the Week.
Now that I think of it, maybe more than accident was at play here. My favorite quote of all time is that of Louis Pasteur: “Chance favors the prepared mind.”
I’m prepared to take a lucky break anywhere I can find it.
