Matt Young gets the call for opening day

Infielder Matt Young, a long-time Minor Leaguer, got the word today that he’ll be on the Atlanta Braves’ 25-man roster on opening day.

Reports from the Braves’ beat writers indicate that Young was so emotional when he was given the news Sunday morning that he temporarily forgot to listen to anything else that was said.

Nobody in the Braves organization has worked harder to get a roster spot. Young, generously listed at 5 feet 8 inches, has had to work harder than anyone else to get noticed. He has been a perennial award winner and all-star.

He hit .300 last year at Triple-A, .358 just a few months ago in Mexico, and in his career was player of the week in the International League, Southern League, Carolina League, Best Hustler in the Southern League . . . and you get the picture.

Has his height kept him back? Probably, but he keeps hustling and winning awards. And now he finally got the call after being in the Braves organization since 2005.

I’ve photographed him for several years, including quite a bit when he was in Mississippi, and I haven’t seen very many players work as hard as he has. He deserves this shot.

Also selected to the opening day roster today were Brandon Hicks, also a long-time Braves farmhand, another feel-good announcement.

Mark Bowman of MLB reports in his blog today that “Barbaro Canizares will be batting cleanup during this afternoon’s series finale against the Pirates.”
Canizares has been called up from the Gwinnett Braves to fill in on the Atlanta roster for Greg Norton, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
I photographed him very briefly at Spring Training this year.

Arrrgh. As if releasing Tom Glavine weren’t enough, the Braves today also traded away three highly regarded prospects for Pirates outfielder Nate McLouth.
They traded away pitchers Charlie Morton and Jeff Locke and outfielder Gorkys Hernandez.
I’ve photographed all of these guys in recent years, most recently Locke at Myrtle Beach.
I hate it when the Braves trade away these guys . . .

Outfielder Brandon Jones got the callup today from Gwinnett, with Garret Anderson going on the disabled list.
I took this photo of Brandon at Spring Training, where he got a lot of at bats this spring.

Jo-Jo Reyes likely to start in Gwinnett

Reyes, Jo Jo 7609(Priddy) 500px.jpg

I have to say I’m pulling for Jo-Jo Reyes. I’ve photographed him several times as he’s come up through the minors, and every time I saw him he was always lights out.
He struggled a bit last season in Atlanta, but he looked good again the other day pitching in an intra-squad game at Champion Stadium. That’s when I took the above photo.
Despite that, and a good spring, he was sent down to the Minor League camp today, and likely will start the season in Triple A.
