Braves trade three prospects for Pirates’ McLouth

Arrrgh. As if releasing Tom Glavine weren’t enough, the Braves today also traded away three highly regarded prospects for Pirates outfielder Nate McLouth.
They traded away pitchers Charlie Morton and Jeff Locke and outfielder Gorkys Hernandez.
I’ve photographed all of these guys in recent years, most recently Locke at Myrtle Beach.
I hate it when the Braves trade away these guys . . .

J.C. Boscan picks up Southern League award

Boscan, JC 8021 500px.jpg

Veteran Atlanta Braves farm hand J.C. Boscan has been named Southern League hitter of the week.
I’ve photographed J.C. so often that he always recognizes me now and asks how I’m doing. Last time I saw him we almost bumped into each other in the tunnel under the Braves’ Spring Training facility. I was heading for the field and he was grabbing bats from an equipment closet.
The award from the league said, “The Maracaibo, Venezuela, native had five multi-hit games and also drove in at least one run in each contest [last week]. His .550 average over the last week led the league by nearly 100 points and he ranked second in doubles (4) and slugging percentage (.750).”
I hope this is the start of many honors for this great guy. I’d like to bump into him again . . . in Atlanta.

Diory Hernandez makes Major League debut

Hernandez, Diory 8261 500px.jpg

Infielder Diory Hernandez saw action in his first Major League game tonight after being called up from Gwinnett to replace Omar Infante.
I’ve photographed him quite often as he has made his way up the Atlanta farm system, most recently at Spring Training. But this is a shot from last year at Mississippi.

Medlen to make his debut Thursday for Atlanta

Medlen, Kris 8633(Priddy) 500px.jpg

Kris Medlen, another young player in the Atlanta system, has gotten the callup and will be the starting pitcher Thursday as the Braves take on the Rockies.
Although the Braves organization has high hopes for Medlen, he’s probably going to be a short-timer in the rotation. He takes the place of Jo-Jo Reyes, who is being sent to the bullpen, and likely will hold that position until Tommy Glavine is ready to take his place.
The 23-year-old Medlen was with Mississippi last year and helped the team with a Southern League championship. He holds the distinction of being (as far as I can recall) the only player I asked to pose foe a photo this year. I asked for a shot of him wearing his championship ring during the team’s ring ceremony at Spring Training. (That photo is on this blog somewhere . . .)

Update: Originally scheduled to start Tuesday, a shift in the Braves’ rotation now puts off his debut until Thursday.

Todd Redmond starting off great at Gwinnett

Redmond, Todd 1618 500px.jpg

Todd Redmond had a great night in his last start, striking out seven and taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning for the Triple A Gwinnett Braves.
He’s 2-1, with a 2.33 ERA and 16 total strikeouts in five games.
I photographed Todd at Mississippi last year when I was shooting their card set.

Braves deal Blaine Boyer to Cardinals

Boyer, Blaine 842(Priddy).jpg

I have to admit to a little uneasiness in the pit of my stomach when I heard the news that Blaine Boyer had been traded to the Cardinals.
It may be that he needs a change of scenery, but I’m sad to see him leave the Braves. I’ve photographed him many times over the years, and always liked the way he pitched. In fact, there’s a 4-foot-high poster of Blaine in the Mississippi press box, based on a photo of mine (similar to the one above).

I also photographed Barton when he was on the Kinston Indians, below, same year.

Let’s hope Blaine succeeds in a new environment.

The 2008 Southern League champs, the Mississippi Braves
I was just able to squeeze in the ring ceremony for the Mississippi Braves, the 2008 Southern League champs, before I had to get in the rental car and head to the airport.
I wanted to be there, so I arranged the flights so I could take these photos. I’ve photographed these guys many times before, and this was my second Spring Training ring ceremony.
In the first one, several springs ago, I photographed Jeff Francoeur as he received his Rome championship ring. This time, I got Kris Medlen, below.

Just one of those photos that sticks

Sometimes a photo grows on you, and this is one of those photos. I shoot a lot of kids at ballparks, looking for that elusive shot that displays a timeless connection between kids and ballplayers. (Insert relevant cliche here.)
One of the good things about the off season — maybe the only good thing — is having the time to go back through the season’s photos, looking for images I missed the first time. This image is one I kept looking at again, and I kinda like it.

Braves rearranging their minors pitching coaches

Botelho, Derek 8742 500px.jpgI love watching pitching coaches do their thing, and I particularly like the guys in the Atlanta organization. Derek Botelho is a hands-on coach, and I have several photos of him instructing young pitchers when he was with the Mississippi Braves.

He’s going to bemoving up to serve as Triple-A Gwinnett’s pitching coach in 2009, and I should have a chance to photograph him again this year.
